Life Lesson 9-we will endure all kinds of trouble when we are sustained by the belief that things will get better.
Sometimes in the middle of winter, I feel a grey cloud hanging over me, a tiredness from the damp dark days. I start sleeping a little more and slow way down. If I don't pay attention, I begin to take on the seasonal blahs. The happy thought that warm sunshine weather is around the corner reminds me not to dwell on the dark side.
(In fact, rereading those words makes me feel blah. wow, let some sunshine in!)
In the same way that the sun dispels the grey, the presence of hope for good things to come in our lives drives away the colorless depressing thoughts, and helps us see through trouble.
(don't you want to laugh right here? No? I sound so serious, but bear with me.)
(Seriously, though) There's a bible verse that says "hope deferred makes the heart sick," and heartsick is not how we want to walk through difficult seasons. Contrast heartsick with the energy that hope gives! We are less likely to give up if we can see the end in sight. Hope means there is something to look forward to. We don't say, "Nothing I do matters." The presence and power of hope is absolutely vital for us to persevere.
We will endure all kinds of troubles when we are sustained by the belief that things will get better.
The best part is that there are times when hope is so powerful, we don't even see the difficulties anymore, and when that happens, we have stumbled into our season of faith. Look down the road and be encouraged, because faith is the substance of things hoped for. Hoped for. What would you hope for, if you could hope for anything?
